Lawn Scarifying and Raking

Regular scarifying or raking keeps levels of thatch( moss, old grass stems and other debris) at an acceptable level. Layers of thatch greater than 1cm deep can impede water and fertiliser penetration.

Lawn thatch, moss and debris is very nature removed more easily by this cutting action and the result is a firmer lawn that allows the passage of air, nutrients and water easily inti it. Take scarifying a step further by letting the scarifier blades cut into the soil and open the soil surface and make an ideal seed bed for introducing new grass seed to your lawn.

The blades also prune the grass plants because it cuts them downwards rather than cross cutting as in mowing. This pruning, just like pruning a bush or plant causes extra shoots to grow thus thickening the turf.

The chopping action is also a good way of controlling some of the coarser or delicate weed grasses such as Yorkshire Fog and Annual Meadow Grass. It can also help control creeping weeds such as speedwell and trefoils yellow suckling clover.

After scarifying is best time to sowing new grass seed and ad the Top dressing. Lawn top dressing is the process of adding material to the surface of the lawn. this would normally be loam or sandy loam mixes, sand or organic material.

Top dressing has a number of benefits:

> Smoothing the lawn surface

> Helps control thatch

> Improves the soil

> Improves drainage over time with repeated applications

> Helps in renovating or over seeding

> Protects the grass over winter
